From the producer: We are here on the flinty, clay soil, right on the Sancerre Peak, at the spot on the east side called "La Demoiselle".
The stone is compacted here into a dense layer of sharp, stumbling flints, a soil that is most unfamiliar to the Pinot Noir giving it great originality.
The flinty mineral makes the cherry seem almost like kirsch with peppery notes that are reminiscent of a côte rôtie.
A real surprise for such a great variety as the Pinot Noir.

Along with the domaine Vacheron, Mellot is one of the greatest producers of 'classic' Sancerre: linear, lithe, acid-driven and elegant wines quite different from the powerhouse whites that tend to come from Chavignol. Also like Vacheron, Mellot farms biodynamically and produces a wide range of cuvées, including many site-specific ones, mostly from the areas surrounding the medieval town of Sancerre itself. The style is here supremely elegant, and the top wines have good aging (10+ yrs) potential.

Alphonse is the nineteenth generation of his family to tend vines in Sancerre, and while he could have coasted on the power of his family's name (and the inherent marketability of the Sancerre brand), he's chosen a road less traveled — the labor intensive, economically risky path of biodynamic farming. In a region where mass production in the name of profit is common, his rejection of synthetic herbicides, pesticides and mechanical harvesting is a bold move.

Such dedication makes a difference. By prizing the health and integrity of his land, Mellot renders singular wines of grace and balance that are veritable blueprints of regional terroir.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 92
"La Demoisellle is part of the narrow slice of Sancerre vineyards that are planted on clay-flint. The vines tumble towards the Loire to the east of the village, separated from the rest of the appellation's limestone-based vineyards to the west of the fault line that slices through the area. The 2021 is a crisp, pure style with the flint giving a sense of direction throughout while the mid palate is suffused with a fragrance akin to elderflower, pineapple and pear. Tangy and balanced, it is very attractive in youth for its primary aromas but can evolve. Tasted as a finished sample in tank." -Rebecca Gibb MW
